
Dealing with Electrical Noise in Your UV Curing Setup
If you’ve spent any real time on a shop floor, you know it’s a noisy place. I’m not just talking about the sound of the machines. I mean the electrical noise. When you’ve got a few massive printing presses humming away side-by-side, the air gets thick with electromagnetic interference (EMI). It happens all the time. Those high-voltage ballasts and motor drives throw off sparks of interference that mess with your equipment. For a mercury UV bulb, that usually means annoying flickers or, worse, a bulb that dies way before its time.
Keeping the Arc Steady
The secret to a good UV bulb is all about the arc. Think of it like this: if the bulb can’t ignore that electrical noise from the press next door, the arc starts to wander. That’s where you get those frustrating “zebra stripes” on your work. It ruins the cure and kills your quality. We fixed this by tweaking the gas mixtures and the way the electrodes are shaped.
