
Dealing with Electrical Noise in Multi-Press UV Curing
When you’ve got a few large-scale printing presses running in the same room, things get loud. I don’t just mean the noise you can hear—I mean the electrical noise. Between the high-frequency power supplies and those heavy motors, you’ve got a lot of electromagnetic interference (EMI) floating around. If your UV lamps aren’t up for the challenge, you’re going to see it. Flickering. Inconsistent curing. Ballasts that give up the ghost way too early. It’s a headache you don’t need. Why your UV output takes a hit UV lamps need a very specific arc discharge to work right. But on a busy shop floor, electrical “noise” from the machine next door can leak into the power circuit. It messes with the arc stability. We handle this by focusing on the shielding and the internal impedance of the assemblies. We tweaked the electrode geometry and used high-grade quartz envelopes. Basically, it keeps the arc from “wandering” just because the power grid is acting up. Keeping things steady Stability isn’t just about the bulb itself. This is the part that actually matters for your bottom line: your ink sets at the same rate on the first sheet as it does on the ten-thousandth. You won’t have to kill the line just to tweak the intensity because some other press nearby kicked into high gear. It just works. The catch: You’ve got to keep it cool Here’s the thing. High stability and high output create a lot of heat. Our lamps can handle the electrical noise, but they push a ton of thermal energy into the curing head. This is where you have to be careful. Your air-cooling or water-chiller needs to be up to the task. If the cooling slips, the quartz tube overheats. And once that happens, all that fancy electrical shielding doesn’t matter anymore. Keep your airflow consistent, or you’ll be replacing burnt-out tubes way sooner than you’d like.
